History

In 1872 Christian Ditlev Ammentorp Hansen was awarded the gold medal for a chemical treatise. His research was aimed at developing a procedure to extract pure and standardized rennet enzyme from calves’ stomachs. This new method revolutionized the production of wholesome dairy products.
Christian D.A. Hansen’s findings led him to establish his first rennet factory in 1874, soon moving to a larger one where he also started to produce natural colors for butter and cheese.
The company is now headquartered in Hoersholm, Denmark with offices all over the globe. More than 2,300 staff are employed in over 30 countries.

Chr. Hansen in China

In 2003, Chr. Hansen moved into the Chinese market for the first time by opening its first Chinese office, an Application and Technology Center (ATC) in the Chaoyang district of Beijing. Chr. Hansen has captured a significant part of the market for dairy cultures in China and expects continued growth. In 2005, Chr. Hansen opened its natural colors plant in Tianjin’s TEDA zone. In 2005, the company’s Chinese platform was expanded with its office in Shanghai.
During the past decade the Chinese organization has grown to 50 employees today.
